I started the translation quickly with much
enthusiasm, because I liked the song.
This is the result:
Dutch translation 1: Allerhoogste God
Hij vormt de bergen en creëert de wind,
openbaart de mensen wat Hij vindt.
Hij maakt de nachten en dagen
en kijkt van boven neer hoe w'ons gedragen.
Allerhoogste God, dat zijt Gij,
allerhoogste God, dat zijt Gij,
van bovenaf ziet Hij ons zondaars staan,
allerhoogste God, dat zijt Gij.

nights and days

watching from above how we behave.

Nadat de vertaling was gedaan, kwam ik
erachter dat het liedje was gebaseerd op
Amos 4:13, dat luidt:
De
schepper van de bergen en de wind, hij die
de mens zijn plan onthult,
hij die
de dageraad verduistert, hij die over de
bergtoppen schrijdt
– zijn
naam is HEER, God van de hemelse machten.
Met dat gegeven wilde ik nog accurater te
werk gaan, met het volgende resultaat.
De eerste vertaling is een veel vrijere
vertaling, maar “loopt” lekker en het
couplet rijmt.
De tweede vertaling is veel nauwkeuriger.
Als het lied aan moet sluiten bij de
bijbeltekst in Amos 4,
dan zou mijn voorkeur uitgaan naar de 2e
vertaling.

After I finished
the translation, I found out that the song
was based on Amos 4:13,
which reads:
He who forms the
mountains, who
creates the wind, and who reveals his
thoughts to mankind,
who turns dawn
to darkness, and
treads on the heights of the earth -
the
Lord
God Almighty is his name.
With that in mind I
wanted to make a more accurate translation,
that resulted in the translation below.
The first
translation is a much freer translation, but
it runs smoothly (sings easy) and the
couplet rhymes.
The second
translation is more accurate.
If the song
has to link with the biblical text in Amos
4,
then I would
prefer to use the second translation.
