I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE CROSS
(a song of communion)
Lord, I'm grateful for the cross
Cruel cross that has set me free
Liberated through Your sacrifice
Death secured for me eternal life
Undeserving and unclean,
but Lord I do receiveLord, I'm thankful for the blood
Precious blood that You shed for me
Cleansing fountain, wash my sins away
Full atonement for my deepest stains!
Sweet forgiveness, can it be?
Yes, humbly I receiveLord, I praise You for Your love
Perfect love brings me home at last
Torn, the veil, now I may enter in
I will never be alone again,
Now and for eternity
I joyfully receiveLord, I'm grateful for the cross
Cruel cross that has set me free
Liberated through Your sacrifice
Death secured for me eternal life
Undeserving and unclean,
but Lord I do receiveLiberated through Your sacrifice
Death secured for me eternal life
Undeserving and unclean,
but Lord I do receive

BACKGROUND & TESTIMONIES
In this song, I've tried to apply
two key lessons I learned from my conversations
with Graham Kendrick and John W. Peterson:1. Focus on the major themes of the faith
(in this case, "the cross")
2. Be poetic and creative in your choice of words
(Graham is a master with his lyrics!)
Started while camping at Fransted Campground (Franconia NH).
(I also wrote "Children Of Light" and "It Is Good" that afternoon)
Completed while waiting for my son at the dentist in Milford MA!
"I was asked to lead worship on my guitar and sing (a communion song)...
our pastor and pianist were away... I had a days notice! ...
So I downloaded "I'm Grateful For The Cross". I sang it through and everyone
gradually joined in. They like it so much, I was asked to play it again...
People were particularly struck by the wonderful words." (email from Alison)

We are missionaries in
Romania and Ukraine and use these songs in our
daily family devotion time as well as in the church here. We sing
them in English and
put the translation of Romania up on the wall so the congregation knows
what we are singing.
We have used quite a
few of the songs from the website over the last few years. When we were
pastoring in South Dakota we used "I'm
Grateful For The Cross" at each
Communion service.
We continue to use this song in our devotions and in the Romanian Church where
I preach.
I really appreciate
the Scriptural basis of the music, the spirit of worship they contain,
and the simplicity that makes them great for congregational singing,
(as well as keeping
it simple enough for "simple" guitar players like myself!).
