Dark Was The Night
Dark was the night of sin and death, covering all the earth,
Nought could be found of joy or peace, Gone was the voice of mirth;
Then unto shepherds keeping watch, Over their flocks by night,
Angels in joyous song appeared, Bringing a glorious light.
Glory to God is their refrain, Hear how the angels sing,
"Peace on the earth, good will toward men," As they glad tidings bring;
Fear not for unto you is born, This day in Bethlehem,
He who is Savior, Christ and Lord; This sign we give of Him.
Him ye shall find in swaddling clothes, Laid in a manger low,
Let us in haste with shepherds now, Unto the Christ-child go;
See Him in poor humility, Swaddled against the cold,
Here is God’s greatest Gift to man, Showing His love untold.
Here is the spotless Lamb of God, Promised when Adam fell,
See how our God His word doth keep, Here is Emmanuel!
Worship and adoration give, Ponder this Gift so free,
For the long road from Bethlehem, Leadeth to Calvary.
