Is There No Balm In Gilead

Is there no balm in Gilead, To heal a sin-sick soul,
Is there no kind Physician, Heart, wounded, to make whole?
Where is there Oil of gladness, To soothe repentant tears?
When other help has vanished, Is there for sin a cure?

Yea, in a Garden fertile, Fruit of the choicest Vine,
Fills e’en to overflowing, The press of wrath Divine,
Here ‘neath the sinner’s judgement, Abundant Ointment flows,
‘Tis life and health and healing, And joy for every woe.

Where is a place of cleansing, For one defiled with sin,
Who must among the people, Cry out, "Unclean, unclean?"
Where is a bond-slave sinner, Who long with sin has trod,
From death and hell delivered, And reconciled to God?

See, on an Altar, Holy, God has Himself prepared,
A spotless Lamb, sin-offering, From Heav’n life-giving fare,
Here unto you is opened, By Father’s matchless love,
Fount of eternal cleansing, His Covenant of blood.

Now hearken burdened sinner, In death and poverty,
Come, buy eternal Substance, ‘Tis plenty for your need,
Yea, freely, without money, Eat of the Bread of Life,
See how the Wine of Calv’ry, Remission full provides.

Come timid heart, He beckons, Plunge ‘neath this crimson Flood,
Drink deeply of these waters, Taste of the Savior’s love,
Your thankful heart will warble, A Heav’nly melody,
Sweet strains of vict’ry’s anthem, The song of the Redeemed..
