For God hath so appointed, His own He thus would try;
The furnace of affliction, Is where God’s children see,
The Fourth One in the fire, Within their company.
Fear not, for He is with thee, Thy burdens He doth know,
Thy sorrows and temptations, He carried as His own;
His love is everlasting, And He shall ever be,
The Fourth One in the fire, Thy every step to keep.
Should Satan bring against thee, The fearsome gates of hell,
Or sin seek to o’er-throw thee, Press on, for all is well;
Gethsemane to Calv’ry, Was trod by He who is,
The Fourth One in the fire, Who evermore doth live.
A little while afflicted, Then glorified for aye,
From earth’s oppressing shadows, Shall dawn eternal Day;
Thou shalt in Glory see Him, Who now by faith is thine,
The Fourth One in the fire, Where shineth faith refined.
He to this end will keep you, Ye blood-bought flock of God,
Each one to Him is precious, And graven on His palms;
Soon ye shall hear the Trumpet, ‘Twill be the moment when,
The Fourth One in the fire, Shall your affliction end.
